Media Busters: Detect and Protect Yourself from Media Manipulation

Mass media plays a powerful role in shaping our perceptions and values about what is attractive and who is valued in our culture. The social belief, for example, that personal worth is determined by physical appearance is pervasive and has been effectively sold to us through the media. This presentation sensitises students to the power of the mass media and provides strategies that protect young people from being ripped off – financially and psychologically. Become an empowered and savvy consumer of the media industry.

Positive Body Talk for Girls: From Body Complaints to Body Appreciation

I’m so fat, too this, too that…. The female tendency to focus on our “bad” bits, can develop into a lifelong habit of picking on ourselves. In this presentation we expose the inner body critic and learn how to prevent it from undermining our self-confidence and body esteem. We examine the conversations girls have with each other and learn how to communicate more through self-appreciation than body complaints.

Body Culture for Boys

A rapidly growing beauty industry for males is leaving more boys wanting to look cool, be bigger and get a six pack. In this presentation we explore the body image concerns of young men and how they can avoid the traps of pursuing an ‘ideal’ body. Boys will also become more aware of the impact of their comments and values have on girls body image and self esteem.

Mind-Body Strategies for Enhancing BrainPower

Nutrition, rest and physical activity all have a direct effect on brain function – for better or for worse. Spending long hours at your desk without a break, using caffeine to help you concentrate, or eating to overcome tiredness or boredom all work against having a clear and alert mind. This seminar shows students how they can improve their memory, staying power and capacity to learn, by incorporating simple and effective health habits into their study plan.
